Welcome to Welsh Hills School, where we are devoted to the development and education of the “whole child.”  Welsh Hills is committed to the development of students with many interests, global citizenship, sound character and moral development that promotes lasting values, and will guide students for their lifetime. We accomplish this while keeping high academic standards throughout each division of the school. We understand and embrace the importance of intellectual development; however, we believe social, moral, physical, and emotional development is equally important. Although no one can predict the future, we are confident that when a student leaves our program, they can achieve anything they encounter in their future.

There are many types of intelligences: linguistic, spatial, musical, kinesthetic, naturalist, manipulative, interpersonal, and others. A school committed to the development of the whole child does not focus on just one or two, only to neglect of the others. Furthermore, how a student learns may be more important than what a student learns. Henry David Thoreau when asked about the impact of a formal education replied, “What does education often do? It makes a straight-cut ditch of a free, meandering brook.”

An education devoted to whole child development should not only leave some brooks free to meander; it should expand the streams of thought by which students understand, examine and solve problems that they have never encountered before. This is what Maria Montessori observed over 50 years ago. Through observation, self-discovery, meaningful work, and an ordered prepared environment, she found this to be the best way for students to learn. In essence, students become skilled at “what is” knowledge, in order to create “what can be.” Education is timeless when students reach their full potential through its blend of training and creative learning, when the path of thoughtful educational experience results in imaginative inventors, authors, physicians, engineers, designers, entrepreneurs – innovative leaders of all kinds. A Montessori education inspires life-long learners who possess the ability to respond effectively to a rapidly changing world.

Developing habits of the mind and heart in our children is a cherished privilege. Most people can only dream about creating an inspiring learning community for remarkable children; however, that dream has come true for all of us at WHS. Here, students can reach exceptional academic goals and exhibit outstanding artistic achievements while embracing the attributes of compassion and integrity. I consider it a privilege to join you in educating and developing your daughters and sons. Remember, this is a partnership and my door is always open.
