Upper Elementary

Overview & Philosophy

The Welsh Hills School Upper Elementary students are exposed to a challenging and aggressive curriculum. Students in this program will learn through projects designed to enrich their learning by integrating content knowledge with experiences. The Welsh Hills program focuses on the child’s development and a curriculum that encourages students to learn by using hands-on materials and exploring their interests. The goal of this program is to instill a love of learning and an inquisitiveness that will form a foundation for success in subsequent grades.

Academics

Mathematics is taught by level without regard to grade. The math program focuses on teaching pre-algebra, as basic computation skills and true understanding of numeration.

The focus of our Language Arts assignments includes parts of speech, literature, creative writing, report writing, vocabulary, and spelling.

Humanities focus on ancient history, geography, economics, government, cultural studies and local history.

Inquiry, observation and scientific method are the emphases of the Science program that covers the areas of botany, astronomy, health science, ecology and scientific method.
