Through the generosity of many, we raised $52,000 which will impact each level and all children at our school.

Such a successful event would not have been possible without the leadership of our dedicated auction co-chairs Sharon Sinsabaugh and Walter Palawsky. Together, with their committee, they orchestrated an event that was memorable for our guests and that will enable us to enhance the educational experience at Welsh Hills.

In addition to our tireless co-chairs, we would like to thank our 2012 Auction Committee: Melisa Appleman, Paul Avila, Joe and Shelley Brown, Casey Curtis, Linda Dimon, Jim and Angela Dorenbusch, Vince Engle, Steve Fancelli, Leslee Herro, Rachel Karon-Lackey, Alison Littlejohn, Mary Lucas-Miller, Lisa Rajaie, Deirdre Stevens, Pattie Wolf and Care Wright.

Special thanks to David Schnaidt of Appletree Auction for entertaining and enticing guests to bid on our live auction items and to Bruce Cramer for his hospitality in making The Bryn Du Great Hall a fabulous space to host an event. In a world full of technology and a gnat’s length attention span based upon the media, Welsh Hills has the unique opportunity to link young minds with Old World ideas. These age-old functions of agriculture that gave our ancestors a true bond with the Earth and what goes on naturally can open a child’s eyes to something magical. Seeds that they plant and nurture through the plant’s life cycle will grow and feed them and their classmates in the summer and fall. These plants are also sold in our community to lend a hand to others in their endeavors to eat “hands-on” food. Proceeds from the farmers market and the Annual Spring Sale fund a middle school trip and maintain, grow and improve our agricultural/horticulture program.

This year, students from every age group (toddlers to middle school) are getting their hands dirty working with vegetables, herbs and perennials. Some varieties that have been started include: Baxter’s Bush, Roma and Yellow Pear tomatoes. Our Beefsteak tomatoes and Serrano peppers are from Welsh Hills’ own seeds that were saved from last year’s harvest. Curled and Italian parsley, Stevia, Spearmint, Sage, Thyme, Cinnamon and Genovese basil can also be found in our greenhouse — and we are just getting started!

We also have a carryover Rosemary from last year that is 18” tall in gallon pots. Yes, we have been busy! We hope to see you this spring. We invite you to check on our progress. Please stop by the greenhouse any time. Look for our sale flier coming in April.
